At the resumed sitting of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on 29th July, counsel to Deacon Udom Emmanuel, Assam Assam ( SAN) to the amazement of all and contrary to Tribunal’s order on the previous adjourned date announced his unpreparedness to commence defence of his client.
Reliable and dependable sources have given hints that Udom’s failure to commence defence may not be unconnected with grumblings within ranks of his Party. Available hints have elicited information that Udom is being held in the jugular by his partymen who are disgruntled by the shabby treatment meted out to them by the Governor after he was assisted and supported to win the election.
Prior to the election, Udom is figuratively said to have “poured money on the streets” and for his partymen who indulged in voters’ inducement and vote buying. According to our source, Udom had promised that “more money will flow” at victory after the election. It’s said that the Governor reneged on his promise soon after he was purportedly declared winner by INEC. Udom chose to savour his victory alone and shot the doors of government house against everyone (including the dubious fathers of faith) who assisted and supported him during the election. Now, his Partymen are peeved, piqued and grumbling because of lack of attention and the shabby manner Udom has treated them.
Aggrieved partymen are now seeking their pound of flesh by refusing to come forward to testify for Udom at the Tribunal.
It is true to conclusively infer that Assam’s failure to commence defence yesterday and request for adjournment was sequel to refusal of Udom’s Partymen to support his case at the Tribunal.
Negotiations are currently ongoing between the Governor and his partymen in an effort to get them back on board.
A few days ago, Udom’s campaign DG, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga held a meeting with the hierarchy and youths of the campaign organization in the guise of thanking them for their support during the elections. As revealed, the main essence of the meeting was to pacify them to continue to support Udom and undoubtedly prepare for the expected election re-run.
The umbrella party has shattered.
